You have more power than you realize

Imagine it.

Your worst enemy just showed up.

They’re looking right at you with that annoying smirk on their face.

You’re so annoyed.

You remember all the awful things they’ve said before.

Now you’re seething with anger.

Ready to explode.

Why the heck are they even here??

Right then, your enemy’s spouse walks up.

The spouse is filled with joy to see them.

They smile and run into their arms.

How can this person fill you with rage and fill the other with love?

Because it has nothing to do with the person.

It’s our perception of them.

Our perceptions control more than how we feel.

They determine the chemical reactions our bodies release.

Will it be adrenaline? Dopamine? Serotonin?

It’s actually up to you.

You have the choice to choose how you see things.

And that choice sets off a cascade of events within your physical body — chemicals, blood pressure, emotions, you name it.

I used to have a lot of “bad days” until I learned I don’t have to.

I learned that they were only “bad” because I deemed them so.

I gave it a label and said “This is bad- so this is a bad day”.

So judgey of me, I know.

I was challenged to make a conscious choice to no longer see days as bad.

And now bad days don’t exist for me.

They are just days.

Some are more challenging than others, but I can find wins every day.

With the ownership of perception, I am responsible for the kind of day I have.

No one else.

Nothing else.

(not even a 2-hour traffic delay on the 405 freeway)

Easier said than done, right?

Here’s an action plan to get you started on the journey of owning your perception:

Mindful Awareness: Take a moment each morning to pause and cultivate mindful awareness. Before diving into your day, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and set an intention to approach the day with a positive mindset. Remind yourself that you have the power to choose your perception and that you are in control.

Identify Triggers: Throughout the day, pay attention to situations, people, or events that tend to trigger negative emotions or thoughts. Awareness is key. Take note of these triggers without judgment, and recognize how your perception plays a role in your response to them.

Reframe Your Perspective: When faced with a trigger, consciously choose to reframe your perspective. Challenge negative thoughts and seek alternative interpretations. For example, instead of viewing a setback as a failure, consider it an opportunity for growth and learning. Train yourself to find the win in every situation.

Gratitude Practice: Incorporate a gratitude practice into your daily routine. At the end of each day, take a few moments to reflect on three things you are grateful for. This practice shifts your focus towards positivity and trains your mind to seek out the good, even in challenging times.

Surround Yourself with Positivity: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Seek out positive influences, whether it’s through supportive friends, coaches, mentors, motivational books, inspiring podcasts, or uplifting music. Engage in activities that bring you joy and fuel your positivity.

Self-Care and Well-being: Prioritize self-care and well-being as essential components of your daily routine. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature. Take care of your physical and mental health to enhance your resilience and overall outlook on life.

Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself on this journey. Understand that it takes time and practice to shift your perception and overcome the habit of labeling days as “bad.” If you have a setback or find yourself slipping into negativity, offer yourself compassion and gently redirect your focus towards a more positive perspective.

You have the power to choose the lens through which you view the world.

By implementing this action plan and remaining consistent in your efforts, you’ll gradually transform your days into positive, fulfilling experiences.
